Taking lots of photos along the way, we headed east out of New Mexico, via iconic Route 66, on through Texas, Oklahoma and Tennessee. Then north to Maine!
~~~New Mexico~~~
I didn't note where I took this photograph, but what a busy train crossing!
Route 66 ~ Tucumcari, New Mexico
Love all the old Rt 66 buildings in this little town
~~~Texas~~~
I never saw a mountain in Texas like this when I lived there!
Old and New Windmills
Still on Route 40/Route 66 |
TEXAS CATTLE. Didn't want to think about whats ahead for them. |
Another view of Cadillac Ranch, Amarillo Texas, which I first saw last March
on our way to Fort Worth ~ love the dumpsters!

Interesting landmarks on our drive : Groom, Texas
http://www.takemytrip.com/08plains/08_53a.htm
"...By the time you've reached the Texas panhandle on Route 66, the landscape has gone from hilly to rolling to just plain flat. That's why it's nice to arrive in Groom, where a couple of local landmarks provide large and strange diversions from the level land......
....The tilting of the tower is all part of a plan to draw attention to a nearby truck stop, that went out of business years ago.....
'.......funny that the sign for the truck stop had yet another tilted water tower on top--just in case you missed the bigger one, across the field, or somehow failed to make the connection."
"Miles before the leaning water tower came into view, you were already staring at Groom's other unavoidable landmark: the 19-story tall Cross of Our Lord Jesus Christ. The super-sized spiritual symbol inspires drivers for 20 miles in either direction".
On the right is a photo the Texas Welcome Center, just before entering Oklahoma.
Unusual bunker type building.

"President Obama visits the El Reno Federal Correctional Institution
outside of Oklahoma City, marking the first visit by a sitting
President to a federal prison. July 16, 2015. "

Deciding we wanted to eat Lunch at an authentic Route 66 restaurant, I checked out our guidebook and thought Roberts Grill in El Reno looked promising. As we drove into town on Business Route 66, we passed lots of Media cars and trucks and a prison. We had no idea what was going on. Once we entered Roberts Grill we heard all about President Obama's visit. The other patrons were surprised that we were able to drive right by the prison. We all realized that the President had already departed thanks to the news on TV.
By the way, the hamburgers were delicious!
Another Iconic Rt. 66 landmark ~ Lucille's Service Station, a classic and historic gas station along Route 66 near Hydro, is one of only two upper-story, out-thrust porch style stations left on Oklahoma's stretch of Route 66. Built in 1929

Yup, these signs are in Oklahoma!
100% Pure Gas?
If you’re from Oklahoma you’ve probably gotten used to seeing signs that say, “Buy 100% gas here”, “No ethanol”, “Ethanol Free”. That’s because a lot of Oklahomans share a love for pure gas" http://kosu.org/post/pros-and-cons-buying-gas-or-without-ethanol#stream/0

Interesting Sculpture in Oklahoma City
Oklahoma City SkyDance Bridge
"The 380-foot-long Oklahoma City SkyDance pedestrian bridge and sculpture spans
Interstate 40 near Harvey Avenue. The bridge's soaring architecture was inspired by
Oklahoma's state bird, the scissor-tailed flycatcher."

"President Barack Obama arrived at Tinker Air Force Base near Oklahoma City
Wednesday night on a Boeing 757. He left Thursday afternoon on a 747."
(http://newsok.com/article/5434255 ).
I wonder if the above is the 757 that the President arrived on.
I took this photograph a few hours after the President left Tinker AFB.
Air Force Two, the vice presidents plane, is a 757:
( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_Force_Two )
"Air Force Two is the air traffic control call sign held by any United States Air Force aircraft carrying the U.S. Vice President, but not the President.[1][2] The term is often associated with the Boeing C-32, a modified 757 which is most commonly used as the Vice President's transport!"
I wonder if the above is actually the Vice Presidents Air Force Two?
~~~~~
~~~~~
I also wonder what this airplane is?

We passed through Arkansas and then into Tennessee
Baseball in Jackson, TN: The Generals are the Class AA affiliate of the Seattle Mariners.
Still on Route 66, this gem was around the corner from where we had lunch!
Love old Red Barns |
Mining in the Mountains |
David Crockett is a distant cousin of mine.
I have always wanted to know more about him, but by the time I saw the signs,
we were unable to stop. Definitely a plan for our next trip through Tennessee!
Virginia is certainly a beautiful state!

Into Pennsylvania
Bad Photograph!! but I couldn't help but try to 'shoot' these birds.
Not sure what they are, but there were just so many of them somewhere in Pa.
We decided to drive by Johns old home in Devon, Pa.
Still holds some of the best memories of my life!

Home, Sweet Maine Home !
Osprey nesting about 2 miles east of Bath, Maine at the Taste of Maine Restaurant.
The Osprey was very active retrieving food and feeding the two babies we could see.
The bar on the left is a camera and you can view their every movement on a monitor
